He realized Sophia was talking to him when she snapped his fingers in front of his face.

"Sorry. What?"

"I asked which beer you prefer."

"Whatever you got is fine. Thanks."

He grinned at her in thanks before typing a quick reply to Tucker.

Working on it.

"There you go." She passed him the beer, a dark amber porter, and he thanked her again before sitting at the kitchen table.

"Tell me about the amazing lawyer who sprang you from jail. Sounds like you know him pretty well."

Caleb hesitated before answering. He wouldn't get into the details of his deal with the SCI team, and as much as he wanted to confide in Sophia, he needed to keep her out of the entire thing. As much for her safety as for his cover story. "Her. She represented that kid who wanted to join the Hunter Network."

Sophia had taken a sip of her beer. She nearly spat it out. Her eyes were wide in disbelief. "You mean that chick who's a fae? The one who negotiated public service instead of prison for that Anderson kid?"

"Yeah. She's a good lawyer. Got me out, didn't she?"

Sophia looked at him with a wary expression. She was smart and looked like she was putting some puzzle pieces together. That would get them both in trouble unless he could sidetrack her.

Caleb sat back in the overstuffed chair. The weight of his choices in the last few months pressed down on him. He wasn't sure how he would pull off the double agent thing without someone getting hurt, and he didn't want that someone to be Sophia.

She grimaced. "I don't know, kiddo. Something doesn't smell right. She's a supernatural. Why would she help a hunter?"

"Hey, look at me." He leaned forward, grabbed her hand, and squeezed it. "I think she's a lawyer first and a fae second. I'm out, and I'm here. It's fine. Nothing to be suspicious about."

She sighed and leaned toward him. "If it seems too good to be true—"

Her ringing phone interrupted her, and her serious expression turned a little darker as she checked the screen. "I gotta take this. Be right back."

"Business or pleasure? If it's the first one, why don't we take this opportunity to let whoever's calling know that at least one of the Isaacsons is back in the game?" He sipped his beer. It tasted almost as good as freedom felt. He grinned, hoping it came off as nonchalant and not like a guy trying to hide something.

"Business." She considered him for a moment, contemplating whether to take the call in front of him.

He gestured at the phone as it continued ringing and raised his eyebrows. "C'mon. It'll be a good surprise."

Sophia tapped the screen and held the phone up to her ear.

Caleb spread his hands wide and frowned at her. "Speaker. Put it on speaker."

She rolled her eyes but acquiesced. She hit the speaker icon and held the phone out. Caleb sat on the edge of his seat, eager to discover what had happened while he was locked up.
